BlackFoot Studios becomes official Sony Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita developers

We are proud to announce that BlackFoot Studios is now an official Sony Developer and Publisher for both the Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita! Sony has done a tremendous job of making console development more accessible to smaller developers and are very enthusiastic to provide support on their flagship platforms. We look forward to diving into development on these platforms at some time in the near future.

There is currently no specific product information to disclose at this time.

BlackFoot Studios moves to Unreal Engine 4

We are pleased to announce that Ground Branch is being developed using Epic’s Unreal Engine 4! Don’t worry, the majority of our completed work has moved over with a little bit of effort and things are in a much better state to move forward. For now, here are some of the main reasons for moving on to UE4:

  •  It is modern technology!
  • Many deficiencies and vulnerabilities of UE3 are no longer present
  • UE3 is no longer being actively updated by Epic (It is still supported by Epic)
  • More efficient art/programming pipelines
  • It allows us to compete better in the graphics area without needing tons of developers
  • Allows us to support platforms other than PC without hiring dedicated and expensive specialized programmers
  • Better Dedicated Server support
  • Infinitely better control and performance with dynamic lighting
  • New Material pipeline that makes use of physically-based shaders to give unprecedented control over the look and feel
  • Much more advanced particle systems
  • Advanced AI and the dynamic navigation system make it simple to simulate complex behaviors with navigation meshes that update in real time
  • Advanced DirectX 11 high-end rendering features such as full-scene HDR reflections, thousands of dynamic lights per scene, artist-programmable tessellation and displacement, physically based materials and shading, temporal anti-aliasing, IES lighting profiles

Moving to Unreal Engine 4 provides us a more solid foundation to make sure Ground Branch has a long life. We want to support GB for a long time and UE3 has been around for a while now… its roughly 7 years old and has lots of legacy code/methodologies that we had to continually work around. Basically, UE4 is a  more solid platform to carry BFS/GB for many years to come. Oh, and it’s just a bad ass engine to work with!

We will have much more to show as we gear up for the new Ground Branch Kickstarter.

Door Kickers: Simulations & Training nominated for multiple awards and to be showcased at I/ITSEC 2013

BlackFoot Studios is very proud to announce that Door Kickers: Simulations & Training has been selected as being among the best ‘Serious Games’ of 2013 as a finalist for the Serious Games Showcase & Challenge at I/ITSEC 2013.

Door Kickers: Simulations & Training  will be on display during the 2013 Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) in Orlando, Florida, from December 2 – 5. The annual conference is among the top events to recognize the nation’s best “serious games” – software games that have as their main purpose to train or educate the user rather than simply to entertain.

The project is up for multiple awards including Best Serious Game in the Business Category, the People’s Choice Award (determined by conference participants) and this year’s Special Emphasis Award – the Adaptive Force Award. Adaptive Force games encourage the player to repeatedly try new or different strategies to solve problems while considering feedback with the purpose of improving overall success.

The unique partnership between BlackFoot Studios and Killhouse Games is something that will produce a one of a kind application for Military and Law Enforcement agencies all over the world. We are excited to be able to get the exposure that a show like I/ITSEC brings with it and the opportunities that it presents.

If you are going to I/ITSEC be sure to come find us in the SGS&C area.
