Free Look with Communications?

I think it will be a nice feature to be able to use the free look to get the attention of your teammates and be able to issue commands to them. For example in the free look/communications mode, the team leader may pick a nearby teammate and click on him to get his attention. The teammate's free look view will turn towards the team leader. The team leader will then be able to issue a few commands to him. For example, to tell the teammate to cover fire at a certain location. He will then use the free look to point which location he wants the teammate to cover fire at. The team leader may also tell the teammate to relocate to a safer location. It will also be super cool if hand gestures are incorporated as well to simulate no radio/silent communications. What do you guys think?

On itself a very good idea, in games it has always been very hard to distinguise others, get their specific attention or point out / indicate stuff in the 3d world. Positional sound greatly gives advantages in this area, for direct speech nut also combined over the radio (ACRE for Arma 2).

 

One thing though, the one that is being talked too (the teammate in your "story") of which his attention is being asked for needs to "allow" this to happen. It should be someone's "own" decission to give the attention that is being asked for. Imagine one has just spotted an enemy danger close, automaticly grabbing his "full" attention could ruin his emergency engagement.

Something extended from a project like UT Hudmutator can do the trick. The mutator allows you to use strings/values in teamchat, it also sees the player you look at. Commands like "I'm behind you $playername" etc are possible. Then add a user definable option to highlight + beep at own username in chatlogs and you have an attention function.

 

In infiltration this offered many extended teamchat functions, including cardinal directions. Like, "Enemy spotted, West (210 degrees)" etc. A hud compass would blink the playername when he reported/used team commands.

 

Too add to this all GB could have a hudmutator for nearby teammate awareness like the one made for ARMA2 by Shacktac.

I really want to explore the communications aspect of the game, but it may be something that gets added over time post release. We'll see how it goes.
