Anyone playing this?

www.tribesascend.com/

I was never that into tribes but i owned and played Tribes 2 for a while. Coming from Quake it was a great game to play because apart from first person shooter Tribes also requires speed, skiing, overall inertia movement skills that reminded me of Quake in which i also liked to trickjump, strafejump, run trick levels etc.

Joined the Tribes Ascent beta and it's in good playable shape. I actually enjoy this version much more than the previous Tribes, allthough many hardcore players from the past may feel otherwise.

Any takers?

The game is going to be F2P but to get beta access right now you can pay $30?

LOL, am I seeing this right?

I am very interested in this game. However, I'm interested in paying for a final product. If you want to sell the game instead of making F2P I'm totally fine with that. But selling a beta, the state of which isn't as good a demo which are free, is a little appalling to me. The micro-transactions of F2P games are generally enough to turn me away, but if selling an unfinished product is their marketing strategy, I will remain dubious of this games quality until it's finished and released. At which point it will be F2P anyways.

I'm really liking the videos I've seen. I loved Tribes 2 and wish Vengeance wasn't a dumbed down flop like nearly every other title in the industry. I hope Ascend can breathe some new life into the series because I wouldn't mind getting my jetpacks wet again.

I see your points but the way i see it is, micro transactions, or a set price, are needed for a commercial company if it wants to stay alive. All the content is available for free still, just takes longer to get it all.

About beta, very true too. But these days even the big titles are like beta's on the release date. :(
Games with bugs, that need optimizing, have network issues, broken browsers and much more stuff wrong with them.

I didn't mind paying, and i don't regret it :D.

Natural Selection 2 on the other hand.. Maybe i shouldn't have pulled out my wallet for that one...

They should have released it on PSN / XBL / STEAM instead. Since at least there would have been fans willing to shell out.

Truthfully F2P kind of models only really seem to do well in SE Asia and not so much the US.  Though there are things like Farmville, mob wars etc, but dont think you can really call those "games".
